No wonder when the horrific experiences of the past has been still circulating among the people. This therapy was in the past rather painful, but thanks to the local anesthesia is this problem solved. It ´s only our pity, when we will postpone our problem with root canals.
Modern endodontic treatment is completely different than it used to be and doesn´t have to be painful at all. Also today it´s not necessary to visit the dentist many times, because it is one of the main pillars of maintain the original functional teeth of patients.
How to rescue the tooth
The main aim of the endodontic treatment is removing ill dental tissues from the root system and hermetic sealing system to avoid the passage of bacteria from the external environment.
The first step is an X-ray of the damaged tooth for determine the status of the root system (the shape of the roots and so on...).
The second step is the Preparation of the crown – it is a drilling of the whole of an appropriate size for dentist to find the entrances to each duct. Subsequently is necessary to remove an unhealthy pulp, a jelly-like tissue which is very sensitive due to a nerve supply.
Acute inflammation in this area initially causes strong congestion and subsequently with the swelling of the tissue occurs the pressure rise in the cavity which causes a severe pain. The patient feels as a heavy pressure, pain from the touch, painful reactions to heat or cold. The pain can get worse also at rest without external irritation. Maybe therefore so many patients visit the dental emergency at night. It is good to visit your dentist at the first sign of pain.
It is impossible to determine with certainty if the pulp was completely dead, vital or only pushed to the deep. What helps to the dentist to find a proper decision in treatment is an examination called the vitality test. The vitality test is performed intensive cold stimulus and tapping. That is highly dependent on the subjective response of the patient though. Radiographs can show something more..... X-ray of the teeth
The next step may be a waiting method when the dentist after the treatment and filling a provisional healing pad waits 6-8 weeks and when the vitality will improve he´ll aplly a hermetic cap. In a worse case the dentist will choose for devitalisation of the pulp and root canal treatment. Dental marrow must be removed, subsequently the root canals must be cleaned, extended disinfected and hermetically sealed. After successfully completing the root canals follows final filling and completion of the tooth.
Root canal treatment is more material and time-consuming procedure, which requires high demands on the skill and knowledge of the dentist. Only the properly treated, hermetically sealed tooth prevents further infection of the root system.
Commonly, the treatment is performed under local anesthesia. Endodontic treatment therefore doesn´t have to be a threat or any nightmare for anybody.
